Millennium Promise is a non-profit organization A non-profit organization is an organization that does not distribute its surplus funds to owners or shareholders, but instead uses them to help pursue its goals. Examples of NPOs include charities (i.e. charitable organizations), trade unions, and public arts organizations. Most governments and government agencies meet this definition, but in dedicated to ending extreme poverty. Combining scientific and local knowledge, Millennium Promise believes in the need to attack the root problems of poverty—hunger, disease, poor education, insufficient infrastructure—simultaneously. The organization engages donor nations, corporations, and the public at large as stakeholders in the process.

Currently, Millennium Promise works in 80 villages across ten different countries—Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Mali, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Tanzania, and Uganda. Each Millennium Village has approximately 5,000 inhabitants and work spans approximately five years. Sauri, Kenya was selected to become the first Millennium Village in 2004.

Millennium Promise was co-founded by the economist Jeffrey Sachs Jeffrey David Sachs is an American economist and Director of the Earth Institute at Columbia University. One of the youngest economics professors in the history of Harvard University, Sachs became renowned for implementing economic shock therapy throughout the developing world and in Eastern Europe, and subsequently for his work on the challenges and the philanthropist Ray Chambers. The project work of the Millennium Villages are overseen by a Scientific Council composed of leading scientific and development authorities at the UN Millennium Project The Millennium Project is an initiative that focuses on research implementing the organizational means, operational priorities, and financing structures necessary to achieve the Millennium Development Goals or . The research institute's stated mission is to address complex issues facing the planet and its inhabitants, with particular focus on sustainable development and the needs of the world's poor. In September 2006, the financier and philanthropist George Soros George Soros (pronounced /ˈsɔroʊs/ or /ˈsɔrəs/,; Hungarian IPA: [ˈʃoroʃ]; born August 12, 1930, as Schwartz György) is a Hungarian-American currency speculator, stock investor, businessman, philanthropist, and political activist. He became known as "the Man Who Broke the Bank of England" after he made a reported $1 billion pledged $50 million to Millennium Promise to fund 33 Millennium Villages. This donation has received added attention as a departure from Soros' characteristic sponsorship of democracy building and good governance Good governance is an indeterminate term used in development literature to describe how public institutions conduct public affairs and manage public resources in order to guarantee the realization of human rights. Millennium Promise also supports independent projects to address factors that contribute to extreme poverty and is a founding partner of Malaria No More. Launched in December 2006 at the White House Summit on Malaria, Malaria No More brings together corporations, foundations, faith-based groups, grassroots networks, and the public to support a comprehensive approach to control malaria.
